Advanced Islamic Studies (Alim Class)

The Alim and Alima course comprises a comprehensive and thorough curriculum covering a number of Islamic disciplines designed to equip students of knowledge with the sciences required to serve as Islamic scholars in their communities.

The courses starts with an indepth study of classical Arabic language along with other sciences. These gradually develop students to be able to compehend more advanced and complex texts, a skill required to be able to appreciate and understand some of the classical texts from which much of our islamic learning stems from. 

The ʿĀlim & ʿĀlimah course is in English and Arabic for brothers & sisters, taught by qualified ʿUlamā´ and ʿĀlimāt and comprises an in-depth study of many disciplines including; Arabic language and literature, theology, Qurʾān, Ḥadīth and Fiqh.

Course Outline and Syllabus

Years 1–2: Arabic language & literature, Fiqh, Seerah, Hadith, Tajweed, Qirat

Years 3-5: Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, Principles of Fiqh (Usool al-Fiqh), Principles of Ḥadīth (Usool al-Hadith), Comparative Fiqh, Tafsīr

Years 6 -7: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Jāmi’ at-Tirmidhī, Sunan Abū Dāwūd, Sunan ibn Mājah & Sunan an-Nasâ’ī


Requirements

Minimum entry age for the course is 11. No detailed knowledge of the Arabic language is necessary. However, students should at least be able to recognise and read the Arabic script of the Qurʾān, even if it be slowly and without comprehension. 


Timetable and Duration

  • Start of Programme: September each year
  • Mode of Attendance: Monday to Friday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm
  • Hours of study: 15 hours a week in class and 3 hours home study. Sessions will be onsite.


Assessments/examination

Alim class assessments take place twice a year. Once in December and end of year exams in July. Pass mark is 60%. Where a student is unable to achieve 60% they are given opportunities and support to improve and resit examinations if applicable. 


Fees

The Course fees are £1300 per year which can be paid outright at the beginning of the year or quarterly payments of £325. Quarterly payments are in September, December, March and June.
